Screensaver Control (Part 2)

So if your system administrator has disabled the use of your screensavers, here are some steps that you can take to regain back control over them:
1. Click Start and then the option Run…
2. Type “gpedit.msc” and then press Enter.
3. A window with a tree on its left will open. The User Configuration node has to be expanded. After that expand the Control Panel and click Display.
4. Then, look at the policies to the right in the list. Make sure that these policies from Hide Screen Saver Tab to Screen Saver Timeout have their state set to Not Configured.
5. Now close the window of Group Policy.

Windows 2000 and Windows XP are improved versions of Windows 95/98. It introduced a lot of new features that are needed specifically for their administration. One of them was controlling/disabling screensavers.

If you found out that your office computer has a grayed out screensaver, or even worse, the Screensaver tab itself is missing from the Display properties, then this means that the person who configured your PC or your system administrator have disabled your use of screensavers. This is especially controlled in corporations to prevent their employees from being distracted with these fun screensavers, or downloading these pages from the internet.

So what shall you do if you want to admire all the screensavers that are installed in your computer? You will just have to right click anywhere on an empty desktop and then choose Properties. You will see the dialog in Display Properties. Go through the pages and select the one named Screen Saver. Click on its title to activate it. Then you will be able to see a previous window with the last screensaver that you installed. Then you can select any one of them by clicking on the list. Then, Windows will launch the one you have selected.

Have you ever wondered what will happen to the old screensaver when you install a new one? Rest assured that your old screensaver will not disappear. The new screensaver will just copy itself into one of the folders such as C:\Windows and C:\WindowsSystem if you use Windows 95 or 98. Other folders are C:\WINNT and C:\WINNTSystem32 if you have Windows NT, Windows 2000 or Windows XP. If your system is in drive D, then you should look into D:\Windows.

You will be happy to know that you can install two or more screensavers and you can enjoy all of them. The previous screensavers will not be removed unless you manually uninstall it.

There are files that are ending with “.scr.” These are the screensavers themselves. Meaning, they are the programs that has created all of the amazing effects of the screensavers. For you to install “.scr” files, you have to right click on them and then choose “Install” from the list of available menu options. Once you have done this, Windows will now set the screensaver as default and will open the Display Properties dialog wherein the screensavers settings can be adjusted if you want to.

Of course you have to be careful where you keep the screensaver file. If you placed it in a temporary folder, then it is likely to be moved somewhere else or deleted.

In order to unpack or extract files from a zipped package, you should be able to use a special program. The easiest to use and the most popular is WinZip. You can check it out and download it from http://www.winzip.com. If you are using Windows XP, they have a built-in support for “.zip” files so you do not need additional software.

The most important thing for you to remember is that a “.zip” package contains a collection of files that should be extracted somewhere first before you can use them. It doesn’t really matter what program is used to extract the file. Just follow simple instructions to use it.
