Windows 2000 and Windows XP are improved versions of Windows 95/98. It introduced a lot of new features that are needed specifically for their administration. One of them was controlling/disabling screensavers.
If you found out that your office computer has a grayed out screensaver, or even worse, the Screensaver tab itself is missing from the Display properties, then this means that the person who configured your PC or your system administrator have disabled your use of screensavers. This is especially controlled in corporations to prevent their employees from being distracted with these fun screensavers, or downloading these pages from the internet.

If you’ve seen a burned in image on your monitor, that’s it. But with today’s energy saving technology, do we still need screensavers? Well, that’s totally up to the user for a computer system that is running a screensaver still consumes electricity, you’d think that it would be more environmentally friendly just to shut-down or better yet use the stand-by or hibernate mode to save on alkl the juice that’s being eaten up by your unused PC. Screen savers are relics of the days of old and are today quite irrelevant when it comes to saving power. Energy star rated products are already mandatory, capable of turning themselves off at pre-set intervals to prevent the old nemesis of the CRT tube, screen burn or phosphorus burn-in. The old problem of the screen getting imprinted with the most common image projected onto it by the electron gun.
Newer LCD displays do not suffer this problem though they can suffer from dead pixels or LED elements that burn-out prematurely due to faulty manufacturing procedures. This is expected though a few dead ones are hardly visible. Read the rest of this entry »

Did you know that using a screensaver not only helps keep your monitor last longer, it also helps save you power?

The monitor and displays are the biggest consumers of power in your PC, yes, even bigger than a normal central processing unit (now if your CPU is super buffed up, like one for gaming with fancy shmancy attachments, it might be another mater entirely) so it simply makes sense that when your monitor temporarily turns itself off through the screensaver, you save power.
When doing long tasks like scanning for viruses and spyware and malware, or defragging your disk, converting or rendering videos or photos, downloading files or copying large files, burning a CD or DVD – more or less tasks that render your PC slower – always have a screen saver kick in after a couple of minutes so that you can save up on power.

The advent of the screen saver was actually a way of securing your desktop in the office and at home whenever you stepped out for sometime preventing unauthorized access to your work. The term screen saver was actually a term used to describe the many programs that still utilized the windows-api allowing them to work within the framework of the operating system. The influx of today’s LCD displays are making the use of such programs a bit too redundant for they were designed for use on older CRT displays which suffered from burn-in where an image that was imprinted onto the phosphors themselves leaving them there forever.
