The screensaver industry underwent a huge booming stage during the time when most of the computer screens being used depended on CTR’s or cathode ray tubes. When an image is displayed for a long period of time on a CRT, the screen tends to permanently and gradually change. This leads to the common “ghost” image that appears on your old television set. With this sort of dilemma, the screensaver programs became popular because they helped avoid certain screen damages by consistently displaying images that change within periods of time during user inactivity. A screensaver may also activate certain background tasks such as distributed computing applications or virus scans that only uses small amounts of memory.

Screensavers have many uses and security is one of them. There is a large number of programmed screensavers that may be configured to first ask for a password before allowing the user to continue with what he is doing. Perhaps providing security to your system is one of the most critical and significant roles of screensavers since it helps users in avoiding system infiltration that could possibly lead to leakage or stealing of confidential data. Users should not confuse the screensaver with the Windows Power Management Features because screensavers actually consume, if not waste, power while actively running on your system. It is recommended that you activate your screensaver for security purposes if you want to prevent other users from obtaining access to your system.

Screensavers were originally devised to prevent phosphor burnout on CRT monitors, something I’ve only ever witnessed on old ATM displays. With LCD panels there’s no real need for a screensaver, but we’re past the point where such things had a proper function and now they serve mainly to entertain.
From an energy-saving standpoint, screensavers are not a good thing. It’s far better to use Windows Power Management to put your PC on standby, or switch it off altogether, rather than contribute to climate change.

MobileTV is slowly gripping the world because of its obvious advertising advantages. MobileTV could have 210 million viewers and global earnings of $11.7 billion by 2011. But while transforming promise to profit is acknowledged to be a challenge, the service characteristics of personalization and convenience, driven by video convergence and supported by original value-added products, can create the compelling experience that’s imperative to switch on and retain a loyal audience for mobile TV. The fundamental building blocks for mobile TV — standards and content — are falling into place.
The industry is making progress on infrastructure interoperability and content management. Within the next 12 to 18 months, mobile TV handsets will be available that aggregate content from different technologies (such as 3GPP Multimedia and DVB-H systems) and across service provider networks.

The visual arts industry that is the screensaver business has long since been a part of computer culture that even today’s energy efficient hardware still use to prevent a problem known as screen burn-in. If you’ve seen a burned in image on your monitor, that’s it. But with today’s energy saving technology, do we still need screensavers? Well, that’s totally up to the user for a computer system that is running a screensaver still consumes electricity, you’d think that it would be more environmentally friendly just to shut-down or better yet use the stand-by or hibernate mode to save on alkl the juice that’s being eaten up by your unused PC. Power down and save a few kilowatts of power so you do get to save a bit of electricity. It’s greener and for the benefit of all.

Screen savers have a security purpose in businesses such as securing unattended desktops from prying eyes as people take their coffee breaks. These can be set as security extensions for people who work with financial institutions or other vital offices that may have confidential information displayed on their screens at all times. That is if they are configured right and used as they were designed for by the IT department or support personnel. Some people fail to realize the security these graphics programs can attain. Most people simply see them as a nuisance and IT sees it as a waste of time. Read the rest of this entry »

Screen savers are relics of the days of old and are today quite irrelevant when it comes to saving power. Energy star rated products are already mandatory, capable of turning themselves off at pre-set intervals to prevent the old nemesis of the CRT tube, screen burn or phosphorus burn-in. The old problem of the screen getting imprinted with the most common image projected onto it by the electron gun.
Newer LCD displays do not suffer this problem though they can suffer from dead pixels or LED elements that burn-out prematurely due to faulty manufacturing procedures. This is expected though a few dead ones are hardly visible. Read the rest of this entry »

Did you know that using a screensaver not only helps keep your monitor last longer, it also helps save you power?

The monitor and displays are the biggest consumers of power in your PC, yes, even bigger than a normal central processing unit (now if your CPU is super buffed up, like one for gaming with fancy shmancy attachments, it might be another mater entirely) so it simply makes sense that when your monitor temporarily turns itself off through the screensaver, you save power.
When doing long tasks like scanning for viruses and spyware and malware, or defragging your disk, converting or rendering videos or photos, downloading files or copying large files, burning a CD or DVD – more or less tasks that render your PC slower – always have a screen saver kick in after a couple of minutes so that you can save up on power.

The advent of the screen saver was actually a way of securing your desktop in the office and at home whenever you stepped out for sometime preventing unauthorized access to your work. The term screen saver was actually a term used to describe the many programs that still utilized the windows-api allowing them to work within the framework of the operating system. The influx of today’s LCD displays are making the use of such programs a bit too redundant for they were designed for use on older CRT displays which suffered from burn-in where an image that was imprinted onto the phosphors themselves leaving them there forever.
