The screensaver industry underwent a huge booming stage during the time when most of the computer screens being used depended on CTR’s or cathode ray tubes. When an image is displayed for a long period of time on a CRT, the screen tends to permanently and gradually change. This leads to the common “ghost” image that appears on your old television set. With this sort of dilemma, the screensaver programs became popular because they helped avoid certain screen damages by consistently displaying images that change within periods of time during user inactivity. A screensaver may also activate certain background tasks such as distributed computing applications or virus scans that only uses small amounts of memory.

Screensavers of today have made great progress when it comes to functionalities. Screensavers are now capable of delivering Real Time Images on your computer screens. A known facility that uses a real time screensaver application is the Northwestern Transportation Center. Their main purpose for using a real time screensaver program is to display the Chicago Highway Traffic and Weather. The facility also wanted to display the Flight Delays and the National Weather. With the aid of an Internet connection, the Northwestern Real Time Transportation Screensaver was able to effectively distribute data to different users faster and more effectively as compared to RSS feeds.

Screensavers were originally devised to prevent phosphor burnout on CRT monitors, something I’ve only ever witnessed on old ATM displays. With LCD panels there’s no real need for a screensaver, but we’re past the point where such things had a proper function and now they serve mainly to entertain.

From an energy-saving standpoint, screensavers are not a good thing. It’s far better to use Windows Power Management to put your PC on standby, or switch it off altogether, rather than contribute to climate change.

But while transforming promise to profit is acknowledged to be a challenge, the service characteristics of personalization and convenience, driven by video convergence and supported by original value-added products, can create the compelling experience that’s imperative to switch on and retain a loyal audience for mobile TV. The fundamental building blocks for mobile TV — standards and content — are falling into place.

The industry is making progress on infrastructure interoperability and content management. Within the next 12 to 18 months, mobile TV handsets will be available that aggregate content from different technologies (such as 3GPP Multimedia and DVB-H systems) and across service provider networks.

So if your system administrator has disabled the use of your screensavers, here are some steps that you can take to regain back control over them:
1. Click Start and then the option Run…
2. Type “gpedit.msc” and then press Enter.
3. A window with a tree on its left will open. The User Configuration node has to be expanded. After that expand the Control Panel and click Display.
4. Then, look at the policies to the right in the list. Make sure that these policies from Hide Screen Saver Tab to Screen Saver Timeout have their state set to Not Configured.
5. Now close the window of Group Policy.

Windows 2000 and Windows XP are improved versions of Windows 95/98. It introduced a lot of new features that are needed specifically for their administration. One of them was controlling/disabling screensavers.

If you found out that your office computer has a grayed out screensaver, or even worse, the Screensaver tab itself is missing from the Display properties, then this means that the person who configured your PC or your system administrator have disabled your use of screensavers. The visual arts industry that is the screensaver business has long since been a part of computer culture that even today’s energy efficient hardware still use to prevent a problem known as screen burn-in. If you’ve seen a burned in image on your monitor, that’s it. But with today’s energy saving technology, do we still need screensavers? Well, that’s totally up to the user for a computer system that is running a screensaver still consumes electricity, you’d think that it would be more environmentally friendly just to shut-down or better yet use the stand-by or hibernate mode to save on alkl the juice that’s being eaten up by your unused PC.
